    2022 MIM Research Group. All rights reserved.The importance of green energy has increased in recent years. Vehicles that don't run on fossil fuels and have zero CO2 emissions are on the agenda of many developed countries. Battery-based vehicles have long charge times and low range problems, making hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles a good alternative candidate as a solution. Fuel cell system designs used in these vehicles is one of the most important subjects in the dawn of the renewable energy age. The present study compares different flow channel pattern designs for PEM fuel cells used in vehicles, all of which were designed and modeled as part of the study. Simulations were run on the three-dimensional flow channel designs to determine the most efficient patterns. Efficiency analyses were extended to include the membrane surfaces, where different properties of fuel flow channels, overall energy efficiency, and certain other parameters used in the PEM fuel cell systems were investigated. The study also includes comparison of the designed systems with fuel cell designs currently in commercial use. Finally, the effects of H2 and O2 concentrations used in the system were also investigated.

    Purpose. The main purpose of the work is to carry out a kinematic synthesis of a crank-slider gripping device in accordance to the criterion of the constancy of the drive power of the mechanism with restrictions on permissible pressure angles in kinematic pairs. Methodology . Achieving this purpose is carried out by means of the theory of mechanisms and machines using the analytical method of the Ozols triangles of kinematics of plane rod mechanisms and mathematical modeling of the movement of links. Findings. The ten-bar mechanism of the gripping device is built on the basis of a paired parallelogram of a crank-slider mechanism with a leading slider. For gripping device, which is built on the basis of the rod scheme, it is advisable optimal design using the criteria for the transfer of motion or transmission indices. The criterion of optimization is the ratio of the speed of the leading link to the projection of the velocity vector of the driven point on the direction of the clamping force vector (power transmission index). The lowest energy costs can be achieved, provided that this ratio is equal to one. Analytical dependences are obtained for determining the velocity function of the central and de-axial crank-slider gripping device, which are convenient for analysis and modeling. On their basis, an energy synthesis of the geometrical parameters of the mechanism of the gripping device in accordance with the criterion of the smallest deviation from the unit ofpower transmission index is performed. The possibilities of the gripping device are enhanced by using it in a de-axial crank-slider mechanism, and the best results can be obtained in a scheme where the de-axial value is larger than the crank length. It is determined the specific values of the relative parameters of the lengths of the links and the ranges of rotation of the crank of the central and de-axial crank-slider of the grippingdevice, which best meet the optimization criterion and satisfy the pressure angle constraints. Originality. For the first time, a new criterion for the transmission of motion was introduced –power transmission index. According to this criteria, a kinematic synthesis of the gripping device built on the basis of a paired crank slider mechanism was carried out. Practical value. Practical recommendations are proposed on the size and location of the links of the mechanism for the central and de-axial crank-slider mechanism, which satisfy the requirements of the optimization criterion and implement restrictions on permissible pressure angles.

    Purpose. The paper deals with the galvanic coupling effect (time of treatment and other factors) on the removal of oil, synthetic surface active substances (SSAS), chromium, etc. from waste process solutions used in metalworking. It presents an overview of wastewater treatment technologies from heavy metal ions based on physicochemical processes. Methodology . To restore hexavalent chlorine to trivalent, authors decided to use the existing averager of acid-alkaline effluents as a kind of galvanic coagulant, for which it was filled with iron turnings and crushed coke. Findings. Authors researched wastewater of the electrotechnical industry and highlighted sorption methods for their purification with the use of coagulants, ion exchange. They considered a new galvanocoagulation method for purification from heavy metal (HM) ions (arsenic, chromium, non-ferrous metals), as well as petroleum products and organic substances dissolved in water. Permissible values of the quality indicators of wastewater and water in reservoirs are given. The classification of heavy metal groups according to the degree of toxic effect is presented. Their influence on the human body is considered. The use of the «LOTOS» reactor in the technological process of electroplatings wastes cleaning allows: to process them in a single stream, to abandon special reagents for cleaning effluents from hexavalent chromium and cyanides, to exclude the need for acidification of effluents, to reduce the use of alkaline reagents up to complete rejection of them, to reduce the equipment rate and number of production personnel (their main function is to purify solutions containing up to 1 g/dm 3 of hexavalent chromium. The reactor consists of unified modules, mounted in a single frame. Originality. On the basis of experimental research work, it was established possibility in principle of treatment of all liquids under research by the galvanocoagulation method. The method consists in contacting of wastewater simultaneously with copper and steel shavings (scrap) without using an external source of electric current. Practical value . The article highlights the topical issues of wastewater treatment from salts of heavy metals, which is necessary for sanitary and ecological purposes. We propose modern energy-saving and low-energy-consuming simple methods, such as the galvanic technique. The modern plant is widely used in industry, electroplating and metalware production. The described methods have a number of positive properties in the economic and energy relations. Salts of heavy metals are dangerous pollutants for both sewage and drinking water. Therefore, water treatment is a very important problem in the field of the environment of our country and abroad. The cleaning effect is achieved within 95 ... 98%.

    Oceanic very short-lived substances (VSLSs), such as bromoform (CHBr3), contribute to stratospheric halogen loading and, thus, to ozone depletion. However, the amount, timing, and region of bromine delivery to the stratosphere through one of the main entrance gates, the Indian summer monsoon circulation, are still uncertain. In this study, we created two bromoform emission inventories with monthly resolution for the tropical Indian Ocean and west Pacific based on new in situ bromoform measurements and novel ocean biogeochemistry modeling. The mass transport and atmospheric mixing ratios of bromoform were modeled for the year 2014 with the particle dispersion model FLEXPART driven by ERA-Interim reanalysis. We compare results between two emission scenarios: (1) monthly averaged and (2) annually averaged emissions. Both simulations reproduce the atmospheric distribution of bromoform from ship- and aircraft-based observations in the boundary layer and upper troposphere above the Indian Ocean reasonably well. Using monthly resolved emissions, the main oceanic source regions for the stratosphere include the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in boreal summer and the tropical west Pacific Ocean in boreal winter. The main stratospheric injection in boreal summer occurs over the southern tip of India associated with the high local oceanic sources and strong convection of the summer monsoon. In boreal winter more bromoform is entrained over the west Pacific than over the Indian Ocean. The annually averaged stratospheric injection of bromoform is in the same range whether using monthly averaged or annually averaged emissions in our Lagrangian calculations. However, monthly averaged emissions result in the highest mixing ratios within the Asian monsoon anticyclone in boreal summer and above the central Indian Ocean in boreal winter, while annually averaged emissions display a maximum above the west Indian Ocean in boreal spring. In the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone bromoform atmospheric mixing ratios vary by up to 50 % between using monthly averaged and annually averaged oceanic emissions. Our results underline that the seasonal and regional stratospheric bromine injection from the tropical Indian Ocean and west Pacific critically depend on the seasonality and spatial distribution of the VSLS emissions.

    Five hormone-treated female Japanese silver eels Anguilla japonica were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released by submersible in the West Pacific at seamounts of the West Mariana Ridge, their supposed spawning grounds. Four eels were tracked for 60 to 423 min in the vicinity of the seamounts. They did not settle at the seamounts but swam at a mean speed of 0.37 m s 1 into open water above deep ground. Their mean swimming depth ranged from 81 to 172 m. Experiments suggest that pre-matured A. japonica migrate to their spawning grounds in temperate warm water and at shallow depths.

    In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), diets are largely based on cereal or root staple crops. Together with socio-cultural change, economic and demographic growth could boost the demand for meat, with significant environmental repercussions. We model meat consumption pathways to 2050 for SSA based on several scenarios calibrated on historical demand drivers. To assess the consequent environmental impact, we adopt an environmentally-extended input-output (EEIO) framework and apply it on the EXIOBASE 3.3 hybrid tables. We find that, depending on the interplay of resources efficiency and demand growth, by 2050 the growth in meat consumption in SSA could cause a growth in greenhouse gases emissions of 1.4 [0.9–1.9] Gt CO2e/yr (~175% of current regional agriculture-related emissions), which is an extension of cropping and grazing-related land of 15 [12.5–21] · 106 km2 (one quarter of today’s global agricultural land), the consumption of an additional 36 [29–47] Gm3/yr of blue water (nearly doubling the current regional agricultural consumption), an eutrophication potential growth of 7.6 [4.9–9.5] t PO4e/yr, and the consumption of additional 0.9 [0.5–1.4] EJ/yr of fossil fuels and 49 [32–73] TWh/yr of electricity. These results suggest that—in the absence of significant improvements in the regional sectoral resource efficiency—meat demand growth in SSA is bound to become a major global sustainability challenge. In addition, we show that a partial substitution of the protein intake from the expected growth in meat consumption with plant-based alternatives carries additional significant potential for mitigating environmental impacts. The policies affecting both farming practices and dietary choices will thus have a significant impact on the SSA and global environmental flows.

    With the increasing proportion of low-carbon power in electricity generation mix, power generation will be transformed from carbon-intensive to metal-intensive. In this context, metal and GHG transfers embodied in electricity transmission of China from 2015 to 2019 are quantified by the Quasi-Input-Output model. Combined with complex network theory, we have distinguished whether metal and GHG transfers show different trends as electricity trade changes. Driving factors contributing to forming the metal and GHG transfers are also explored based on the Quadratic Assignment Procedure. The results show that the electricity trade change has strengthened the metal transfer network significantly, while several key links in the GHG transfer network have weakened. Moreover, we find provincial differences in low-carbon electricity investment contributing to the metal transfer while affecting the GHG transfer little. The above facts imply an expanding embodied metal transfer in the future and shed light on policy making for power system decarbonization.

    The aetiology of building-related symptoms (BRSs) is not well supported by sufficient scientific evidence, and it remains unclear whether BRSs are mediated by psychosocial and personal factors or a genuine physical susceptibility to low-dose chemical exposure. In April 2014, a 40-year-old man consulted the Environmental Medical Clinic at Chiba University complaining of recurring BRSs. Indoor air samples were collected from the patient’s house at 11 time points and subjected to chemical analyses. The patient simultaneously completed a questionnaire about his symptoms at the time of the measurements. Statistical examination of the indoor environmental factors and patient survey revealed that the patient’s symptoms were highly correlated with the indoor air quality. Additionally, ventilation may have mitigated his BRSs, whereas aerial odour did not trigger symptoms. These findings suggest that exposure to specific airborne chemicals in an indoor environment can cause BRSs, and ventilation may be one of the treatment options to mitigate symptoms. Additional investigations on the adverse impacts of airborne environmental chemicals on human health are necessary to develop effective treatments and establish preventive measures for BRSs, and further improvement of ventilation systems is required to ensure clean indoor air.

    Authors: Zhongxuan Li; Wenhao Li;

    Flood events have long been very frequent along the Yangtze River in Chongqing, China. A complete sedimentary sequence of alluvia, found in the Yuxi profile (YXP) was applied to explore features of the palaeoflood layers that maintained records related to the contexts of flooding hydroclimate. The AMS14C dating results dependent on animal bones from the YXP validate that the chronology of the palaeoflood layers was dated, between ca. 8200 and 6400 a BP, and multiple cultural layers were intercut among these palaeoflood layers. By means of particle size and end-member analyses for the palaeoflood sediments, the fractions of fine silt and clay in deposits account for a high proportion of the flood sediments, suggesting that the overbank flood was the main power in building the palaeoflood layers. Due to the climatic episodes defined by pollen assemblages, the thickness of the flood layers is positively correlated with soil erosion because of different hydrothermal conditions. The wavelet spectra of the mean particle-size series also suggest that there may be two major palaeoflooding cycles of ~700 and ~30 years. Despite the sustained palaeoflooding, the Yuxi Culture grew from small to big, and was never broken off, in terms of the findings of artificial remains in the YXP.

    Authors: L. F. Dolina; T. P. Reshetniak;

    Authors: Zhongxuan Li; Wenhao Li;
