    AbstractThe scheduling of branch routes for urban transit systems poses several special problems, some of which are susceptible to relatively simple mathematical solutions. One of these is the problem of adjusting layovers so as to provide for smooth merging at minimum fleet size on routes with unequal travel times on different branches. This problem is shown to be analogous to a simple deterministic queueing or inventory problem. Minimum fleet size for such routes is shown to be equal to the mean vehicle cycle time divided by the headway on the trunk portion of the route.

    In this paper, the statistical characteristics of the multi-cascade κ-μ shadowed fading channels are investigated and analyzed under the classic Wyner’s eavesdropping model. In particular, the general accurate expressions of the probability density function and the cumulative distribution function for amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived for the first time. Moreover, we further utilize the two performance evaluation metrics including outage probability and intercept probability to investigate the impacts of cascade number and channel parameters on reliability and security. Finally, the theoretical results are consistent with the simulations, proving the correctness of the derivation. The interesting conclusion is that when the average SNR is greater than 2 dB, the reliability of the multi-cascade model will decrease as the number of cascade increases; on the contrary, more cascading can lead to stronger anti-eavesdropping ability.

    Adverse road condition is the main cause of traffic accidents. Road surface condition recognition based on video image has become a central issue. However, hybrid road surface and road surface under different lighting environments are two crucial problems. In this paper, the road surface states are categorized into 5 types including dry, wet, snow, ice, and water. Then, according to the original image size, images are segmented; 9-dimensional color eigenvectors and 4 texture eigenvectors are extracted to construct road surface state characteristics database. Next, a recognition method of road surface state based on SVM (Support Vector Machine) is proposed. In order to improve the recognition accuracy and the universality, a grid searching algorithm and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm are used to optimize the kernel function factor and penalty factor of SVM. Finally, a large number of actual road surface images in different environments are tested. The results show that the method based on SVM and image segmentation is feasible. The accuracy of PSO algorithm is more than 90%, which effectively solves the problem of road surface state recognition under the condition of hybrid or different video scenes.

    This paper investigates the problem of containership sailing speed and fleet deployment optimization in an intercontinental liner shipping network. Under the consideration of the time value of container cargo, three kinds of impact of sailing speed changes on long legs of each liner route are analysed, and a time-based freight rate strategy is proposed. Then, the optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming. Its goal is to maximize the total profits of a container liner shipping. To find the optimal solution to the model and improve the efficiency of model solution, a discretization algorithm is proposed. Numerical results verify the applicability of the proposed model and the efficiency of the algorithm. In addition, the time-based freight rate strategy is able to achieve more profit compared to a fixed freight rate strategy.

    Energy-efficient metro operation has received increasing attention because of the energy cost and environmental concerns. This paper developed an integrated optimization model on train control and timetable to minimize the net energy consumption. The extents of train motoring and braking as well as timetable configurations such as train headway and interstation runtime are optimized to minimize the net energy consumption with consideration of utilizing regenerative energy. An improved model on train control is proposed to reduce traction energy by allowing coasting on downhill slopes as much as possible. Variations of train mass due to the change of onboard passengers are taken into account. The brute force algorithm is applied to attain energy-efficient speed profiles and an NS-GSA algorithm is designed to attain the optimal extents of motoring/braking and timetable configurations. Case studies on Beijing Metro Line 5 illustrate that the improved train control approach can save traction energy consumption by 20% in the sections with steep downhill slopes, in comparison with the commonly adopted train control sequence in timetable optimization. Moreover, the integrated model is able to significantly prolong the overlapping time between motoring and braking trains, and the net energy consumption is accordingly reduced by 4.97%.

    Travel patterns reflect the regularity of residents’ mobility, and it is a crucial factor to evaluate the reasonability of urban spatial structure and connectivity of road networks. Therefore, exploring travel patterns is of practical significance for urban planning, traffic management, and improvement of the operational efficiency of the transportation system. In this study, we apply the tensor model to explore travel patterns under temporal and spatial dimensions based on the license plate recognition (LPR) data collected from the Changsha city, China. As travel patterns are influenced by many variables, a method framework based on the tensor model is proposed to explore the influence of variables on travel characteristics. Firstly, we apply clustering algorithms and the principal component analysis method to extract main feature variables, which can achieve the purpose of dimensionality reduction and eliminate the complex collinearity among variables. Then, the tensor decomposition and reconstruction algorithms are performed based on extracted feature variables to analyze their influence on travel patterns. The experiments demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method framework.

    Sustainable mobility is one of the most challenging issues for passenger transport inside environmental protected areas and ecologically fragile environments. To reduce the pollutant emissions, the adoption of electric or hybrid-electric solutions for crafts propulsion is a suitable option for green navigation. However, the operation in restricted basin leads also to specific critical issues for the vessel sailing, as dealing with shallow or restricted waters and transit under low air-gap bridges. The combination of these constraints with the adoption of a hybrid-electric propulsion system increases the design difficulties also for a small craft, requiring the use of advanced simulation models to assess the vessel performances. This work presents a simulation model for a small passenger craft that will operate in the Grado Lagoon. The model combines the hydrodynamic issues of manoeuvring and propulsion in restricted water with the simulation of the electric loads and capacity of the energy storage system installed onboard. The simulations performed with the developed simulation system are in accordance with data measured during trials on a prototype of the vessel. The developed model is a powerful tool for designers in order to rapidly assess the green capabilities of new projects since the early design stages.

    This paper develops two types of estimation models to quantify the impacts of carriage crowding level on bus dwell time. The first model (model I) takes the crowding level and the number of alighting and boarding passengers into consideration and estimates the alighting time and boarding time, respectively. The second model (model II) adopts almost the same regression method, except that the impact of crowding on dwell time is neglected. The analysis was conducted along two major bus routes in Harbin, China, by collecting 640 groups of dwell times under crowded condition manually. Compared with model II, the mean absolute error (MAE) of model I is reduced by 137.51%, which indicates that the accuracy of bus dwell time estimation could be highly improved by introducing carriage crowding level into the model. Meanwhile, the MAE of model I is about 3.9 seconds, which is acceptable in travel time estimation and bus schedule.

    Commercial areas, especially urban ones with numerous buildings, are becoming increasingly prone to congestion because of their popularity. Visual inspections show that interactions between pedestrians and building entrances affect the distribution of pedestrian trajectories, which influences the utility of pedestrian spaces and the design of urban shopping areas. Herein, we analyse the dynamics of pedestrian deviations around building entrances. We used a video recorded using an unmanned aerial vehicle to determine pedestrian trajectories in a Chinese commercial walking space. First, the candidate variables affecting deviation behaviours were determined via correlation testing. Second, two regression models were developed by considering the deviation behaviours of pedestrians walking past a building entrance. The models suggest that the starting position of a pedestrian's deviation, the total pedestrian flow at the building entrance, the density in an area in the vicinity of the entrance, and the number of interacting pedestrians impact the total distance traversed during path deviation.     AbstractThe scheduling of branch routes for urban transit systems poses several special problems, some of which are susceptible to relatively simple mathematical solutions. One of these is the problem of adjusting layovers so as to provide for smooth merging at minimum fleet size on routes with unequal travel times on different branches. This problem is shown to be analogous to a simple deterministic queueing or inventory problem. Minimum fleet size for such routes is shown to be equal to the mean vehicle cycle time divided by the headway on the trunk portion of the route.

    In this paper, the statistical characteristics of the multi-cascade κ-μ shadowed fading channels are investigated and analyzed under the classic Wyner’s eavesdropping model. In particular, the general accurate expressions of the probability density function and the cumulative distribution function for amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived for the first time. Moreover, we further utilize the two performance evaluation metrics including outage probability and intercept probability to investigate the impacts of cascade number and channel parameters on reliability and security. Finally, the theoretical results are consistent with the simulations, proving the correctness of the derivation. The interesting conclusion is that when the average SNR is greater than 2 dB, the reliability of the multi-cascade model will decrease as the number of cascade increases; on the contrary, more cascading can lead to stronger anti-eavesdropping ability.

    Adverse road condition is the main cause of traffic accidents. Road surface condition recognition based on video image has become a central issue. However, hybrid road surface and road surface under different lighting environments are two crucial problems. In this paper, the road surface states are categorized into 5 types including dry, wet, snow, ice, and water. Then, according to the original image size, images are segmented; 9-dimensional color eigenvectors and 4 texture eigenvectors are extracted to construct road surface state characteristics database. Next, a recognition method of road surface state based on SVM (Support Vector Machine) is proposed. In order to improve the recognition accuracy and the universality, a grid searching algorithm and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm are used to optimize the kernel function factor and penalty factor of SVM. Finally, a large number of actual road surface images in different environments are tested. The results show that the method based on SVM and image segmentation is feasible. The accuracy of PSO algorithm is more than 90%, which effectively solves the problem of road surface state recognition under the condition of hybrid or different video scenes.
