    Five hormone-treated female Japanese silver eels Anguilla japonica were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released by submersible in the West Pacific at seamounts of the West Mariana Ridge, their supposed spawning grounds. Four eels were tracked for 60 to 423 min in the vicinity of the seamounts. They did not settle at the seamounts but swam at a mean speed of 0.37 m s 1 into open water above deep ground. Their mean swimming depth ranged from 81 to 172 m. Experiments suggest that pre-matured A. japonica migrate to their spawning grounds in temperate warm water and at shallow depths.

    In the framework of the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II), we present an analysis of the representation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in a suite of seventeen global ocean-sea ice models. We focus on the mean, variability and trends of both the ACC and MOC over the 1958-2007 period, and discuss their relationship with the surface forcing. We aim to quantify the degree of eddy saturation and eddy compensation in the models participating in CORE-II, and compare our results with available observations, previous fineresolution numerical studies and theoretical constraints. Most models show weak ACC transport sensitivity to changes in forcing during the past five decades, and they can be considered to be in an eddy saturated regime. Larger contrasts arise when considering MOC trends, with a majority of models exhibiting significant strengthening of the MOC during the late 20th and early 21st century. Only a few models show a relatively small sensitivity to forcing changes, responding with an intensified eddy-induced circulation that provides some degree of eddy compensation, while still showing considerable decadal trends. Both ACC and MOC interannual variabilities are largely controlled by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Based on these results, models are clustered into two groups. Models with constant or two-dimensional (horizontal) specification of the eddy-induced advection coefficient K show larger ocean interior decadal trends, larger ACC transport decadal trends and no eddy compensation in the MOC. Eddy-permitting models or models with a threedimensional time varying K show smaller changes in isopycnal slopes and associated ACC trends, and partial eddy compensation. As previously argued, a constant in time or space lc is responsible for a poor representation of mesoscale eddy effects and cannot properly simulate the sensitivity of the ACC and MOC to changing surface forcing. Evidence is given for a larger sensitivity of the MOC as compared to the ACC transport, even when approaching eddy saturation. Future process studies designed for disentangling the role of momentum and buoyancy forcing in driving the ACC and MOC are proposed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    It has been shown, by a statistical study of the concentrations of ozone in air as measured by two monitoring stations--one being situated in an urban and the other a rural area--that photochemical smog episodes to occur. The ratio O3 urban/O3 rural is normally less than 1. This ratio, however, has been shown to be greater than 1, when certain conditions prevail, notably on days of high solar radiation and low velocity winds. At nigh-time, in the absence of photochemical reactions, the higher concentrations of ozone observed in town as opposed to the country side has been attributed to air transport phenomena.

    AbstractFossil benthic foraminifera are used to trace past methane release linked to climate change. However, it is still debated whether isotopic signatures of living foraminifera from methane-charged sediments reflect incorporation of methane-derived carbon. A deeper understanding of isotopic signatures of living benthic foraminifera from methane-rich environments will help to improve reconstructions of methane release in the past and better predict the impact of future climate warming on methane seepage. Here, we present isotopic signatures (δ13C and δ18O) of foraminiferal calcite together with biogeochemical data from Arctic seep environments from c. 1200 m water depth, Vestnesa Ridge, 79° N, Fram Strait. Lowest δ13C values were recorded in shells of Melonis barleeanus, − 5.2‰ in live specimens and − 6.5‰ in empty shells, from sediments dominated by aerobic (MOx) and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), respectively. Our data indicate that foraminifera actively incorporate methane-derived carbon when living in sediments with moderate seepage activity, while in sediments with high seepage activity the poisonous sulfidic environment leads to death of the foraminifera and an overgrowth of their empty shells by methane-derived authigenic carbonates. We propose that the incorporation of methane-derived carbon in living foraminifera occurs via feeding on methanotrophic bacteria and/or incorporation of ambient dissolved inorganic carbon.

    40Ar/39Ar geochronology relies on magnetic sector mass spectrometers to determine relative isotopic abundances. Ongoing technological developments within noble gas mass spectrometers over the last decade have led to analysis of increasingly smaller samples and higher precision, but also result in more complex data correction and interpretation. We describe a new multi-collector noble gas spectrometer, the Isotopx NGX-600, that is configured to optimize 40Ar/39Ar measurements. The NGX-600 is equipped with 9 Faraday collectors and one ion counting electron multiplier. Each Faraday is equipped with Isotopx ATONA® amplifier technology, enabling measurements spanning a dynamic range of amplified beam current from below 10−16 A to above 10−9 A. The performance of the NGX-600 is evaluated using both a conventional Nier-type ion source, and a next generation low temperature ion source, which allows for trap current variation from 200 μA to 1000 μA. We have performed over 3000 analyses of atmospheric argon to: (1) assess optimal measurement and integration times for blanks, baselines, and air aliquots of various ion intensities, (2) quantify the sensitivity via measurements of first principles 40Ar/39Ar standards, (3) compare the sensitivity between the conventional and new low temperature Nier-type ion sources, and (4) evaluate corrections associated with inter-Faraday biases, instrumental mass bias, and Faraday-multiplier gain. In addition to optimization experiments, we report a comparative analysis of both single crystal fusion and incremental heating data from Quaternary volcanic rocks obtained using both the 5-collector Nu Instruments Noblesse and the NGX-600 spectrometers.

Therefore, individualized recommendation is an effective and sustainable method for enhancing the professional level of managers and is good for improving the quality of air pollutant management. Thus, this paper initially proposes a novel framework to recommend strengths in air pollutant management. This framework comprises four stages: data preprocessing is the first stage; then, after constructing ability classifications and ability assessment strategies, activity experiences are transformed into corresponding ability values; next, a multilayer perceptron deep neural network (MLP-DNN) is used to predict potential types according to their ability values; finally, a hybrid system is constructed to recommend suitable and sustainable potential managers for air pollutant management. The experiments indicate that the proposed method can assess the full picture of people’s strengths, which can recommend suggestions for building a scientific and rational specialties recommendation system for governments and schools. This method can have significant effects on pollutant emission reduction by enhancing the professional level of managers with regard to air pollutant management.

    High-efficiency maintenance and control of the deep coal roadway surrounding rock stability is a reliable guarantee for sustainable development of a coal mine. However, it is difficult to control the stability of a roadway that locates near a roadway with large deformation. With return air roadway 21201 (RAR 21201) in Hulusu coal mine as the research background, in situ investigation, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and engineering practice were carried out to study pressure relief effect on the surrounding rock after the severe deformation of the roadway. Besides, the feasibility of excavating a new roadway near this damaged one by means of pressure relief effect is also discussed. Results showed that after the strong mining roadway suffered huge loose deformation, the space inside shrank so violently that surrounding rock released high stress to a large extent, which formed certain pressure relief effect on the rock. Through excavating a new roadway near this deformed one, the new roadway could obtain a relative low stress environment with the help of the pressure relief effect, which is beneficial for maintenance and control of itself. Equal row spacing double-bearing ring support technology is proposed and carried out. Engineering practice indicates that the new excavated roadway escaped from possible separation fracture in the roof anchoring range, and the surrounding rock deformation of the new roadway is well controlled, which verifies the pressure relief effect mentioned. This paper provides a reference for scientific mining under the condition of deep buried and high stress mining in western China.

    This study focuses on the investigation of available surface currents and wind parameters for employing them in order to predict the survivor movement in the Szczecin Lagoon waters. For this purpose, the surface currents and wind parameters were generated by selected numerical models and the wind parameters were also measured with the telemetry devices. In this paper, the PM3D hydrodynamic model and the NEMS, ECMWF, GFS weather forecast models have been investigated. The measurements of the wind parameters, recorded at the Brama Torowa I and Trzebież stations, were also analyzed. As part of the research, an expert method was used to evaluate the surface currents parameters. In turn, the method based on comparing the forecasted wind parameters with the measured wind parameters was applied in order to assess uncertainties of these parameters. The comparative analyses of the data on the surface currents and wind parameters have been done and probabilistic models for uncertainties of these forecasted parameters have been formulated. Additionally, relations between the surface currents speeds and the wind speeds, in the case when their directions were consistent, have been also discovered.

    Abstract The nature of incoming sediments is a key controlling factor for the occurrence of megathrust earthquakes in subduction zones. In the 2011 Mw 9 Tohoku earthquake (offshore Japan), smectite-rich clay minerals transported by the subducting oceanic plate played a critical role in the development of giant interplate coseismic slip near the trench. Recently, we conducted intensive controlled-source seismic surveys at the northwestern part of the Pacific plate to investigate the nature of the incoming oceanic plate. Our seismic reflection data reveal that the thickness of the sediment layer between the seafloor and the acoustic basement is a few hundred meters in most areas, but there are a few areas where the sediments appear to be extremely thin. Our wide-angle seismic data suggest that the acoustic basement in these thin-sediment areas is not the top of the oceanic crust, but instead a magmatic intrusion within the sediments associated with recent volcanic activity. This means that the lower part of the sediments, including the smectite-rich pelagic red-brown clay layer, has been heavily disturbed and thermally metamorphosed in these places. The giant coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake stopped in the vicinity of a thin-sediment area that is just beginning to subduct. Based on these observations, we propose that post-spreading volcanic activity on the oceanic plate prior to subduction is a factor that can shape the size and distribution of interplate earthquakes after subduction through its disturbance and thermal metamorphism of the local sediment layer.

    Five hormone-treated female Japanese silver eels Anguilla japonica were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released by submersible in the West Pacific at seamounts of the West Mariana Ridge, their supposed spawning grounds. Four eels were tracked for 60 to 423 min in the vicinity of the seamounts. They did not settle at the seamounts but swam at a mean speed of 0.37 m s 1 into open water above deep ground. Their mean swimming depth ranged from 81 to 172 m. Experiments suggest that pre-matured A. japonica migrate to their spawning grounds in temperate warm water and at shallow depths.

    In the framework of the second phase of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments (CORE-II), we present an analysis of the representation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in a suite of seventeen global ocean-sea ice models. We focus on the mean, variability and trends of both the ACC and MOC over the 1958-2007 period, and discuss their relationship with the surface forcing. We aim to quantify the degree of eddy saturation and eddy compensation in the models participating in CORE-II, and compare our results with available observations, previous fineresolution numerical studies and theoretical constraints. Most models show weak ACC transport sensitivity to changes in forcing during the past five decades, and they can be considered to be in an eddy saturated regime. Larger contrasts arise when considering MOC trends, with a majority of models exhibiting significant strengthening of the MOC during the late 20th and early 21st century. Only a few models show a relatively small sensitivity to forcing changes, responding with an intensified eddy-induced circulation that provides some degree of eddy compensation, while still showing considerable decadal trends. Both ACC and MOC interannual variabilities are largely controlled by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Based on these results, models are clustered into two groups. Models with constant or two-dimensional (horizontal) specification of the eddy-induced advection coefficient K show larger ocean interior decadal trends, larger ACC transport decadal trends and no eddy compensation in the MOC. Eddy-permitting models or models with a threedimensional time varying K show smaller changes in isopycnal slopes and associated ACC trends, and partial eddy compensation. As previously argued, a constant in time or space lc is responsible for a poor representation of mesoscale eddy effects and cannot properly simulate the sensitivity of the ACC and MOC to changing surface forcing. Evidence is given for a larger sensitivity of the MOC as compared to the ACC transport, even when approaching eddy saturation. Future process studies designed for disentangling the role of momentum and buoyancy forcing in driving the ACC and MOC are proposed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    It has been shown, by a statistical study of the concentrations of ozone in air as measured by two monitoring stations--one being situated in an urban and the other a rural area--that photochemical smog episodes to occur. The ratio O3 urban/O3 rural is normally less than 1. This ratio, however, has been shown to be greater than 1, when certain conditions prevail, notably on days of high solar radiation and low velocity winds. At nigh-time, in the absence of photochemical reactions, the higher concentrations of ozone observed in town as opposed to the country side has been attributed to air transport phenomena.
