    In the last decades the private vehicle has been the most commonly used transportation mode for daily journeys. This is a National and European trend and it is due to the economic growth and the investments focused on the road infrastructures. Because of that reason, cities have been often organized in terms of planning with especial attention to road vehicles and not well prepared for pedestrians and cyclists. There is a need to change this behavior to a society that privileges the active transportation modes. However, there is the need to ensure the safety of the most vulnerable users. This Dissertation was focused on analyzing the trends of road crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians and what are the main difficulties that people using active modes face in their daily journeys. In order to reach this objective, crashes registrations involving motor vehicles and vulnerable road users (pedestrians or cyclists) in the city of Aveiro were analyzed (given by the Public Safety Police “PSP” of Aveiro). In relation to accidents involving cyclists, 68% the victims are men; this can be possibly explained because there are more men cyclists than women as was verified in the sample of the survey, but there is a lack of statistics in Aveiro on the gender distribution of cyclists involved in accidents. In a second stage, a survey was prepared with the objective to understand the main difficulties of the university community who use the active modes in their daily journeys. From the survey it has been pointed out that the main problems found are the lack of drivers’ awareness and weather conditions. The third reason was the lack of dedicate cycle lanes. On the other hand, the main motivations for biking are the reduced cost and the easiness of mobility.

  • ITS Applications have in recent years assisted in reducing the number of fatalities in Europe. However, Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) have not benefited as much as vehicle users. The EU-sponsored VRUITS project assesses the safety and mobility impacts of ITS applications for VRUs, assesses the impacts of current and upcoming ITS applications on the safety and mobility of VRUs, identifies how the usability and efficiency of ITS applications can be improved, and recommends which actions have to be taken at a policy level to improve ITS safety and mobility. This paper describes the results of the first phase of the project, in which the critical scenarios for VRUs are identified starting from accident data analysis, and following a user needs based on focus groups and expert interviews. From this basis, the most promising ITS applications for VRUs are selected according to their potential to address the specific needs of VRUs

Behavioural observation of interactions between vulnerable road users and autonomous shuttles in Oslo, Norway. Traffic Safety Research, 2, 000008. https://doi.org/10.55329/fbhr3456 The current paper presents the results of behavioural observations in a field experiment with automated shuttles in Oslo, Norway. Video observations were conducted at five fixed locations along a challenging 1.2 km automated shuttle line with varying traffic conditions. Observed interactions between vulnerable road users and automated shuttles were coded using a predefined codebook, which allowed a structured quantitative analysis. The paper identified several potentially risky types of situations in which the automated shuttles did not always behave according to the traffic rules. Generally, the automated shuttles failed to give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings in 26%–50% of the interactions. Right-turning shuttles failed to yield to cyclists going straight in 38% of the interactions at observation Site 1 (the only location where the automated shuttle takes a right turn). In majority of same direction interactions between cyclists and automated shuttles, the interactions resulted in the cyclist overtaking the automated shuttle, usually on the left-hand side. Generally, the paper found little evidence of road users trying to bully or otherwise take advantage of the defensive driving style of the automated shuttles and identified only a limited number of interactions in which a vulnerable road user behaved ignorant or aggressive towards the automated shuttles. In addition, the paper found very little indication of temporal effects that suggest changes in the interaction patterns over time.

    Road crashes produce more than one million deaths every year around the world, and they are considered as the eighth cause of death for people of all ages. In addition to loss of life, traffic crashes carry more consequences with high impact on the society, including reduction of quality of life, medical costs, property damage and administrative costs. Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users, and there has been an increment on cycling victims in European roads in the last years. Previous research on road safety has shown the impact of road infrastructure on crash risk and severity, which makes essential to consider it in road safety analyses. Although official traffic authorities have infrastructure inventories, this information is rather difficult to get, and usually it is not suitable for road safety assessments. However, due to the increasing use and contribution of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), crowdsourced geographic data is being created around the world, and particularly infrastructure-related data is freely available in OpenStreetMap (OSM). Motivated by the challenge of reducing cyclist victims from traffic crashes, and the availability of data through VGI, the main objective of this research was assessing cyclist safety considering infrastructure parameters from OSM. Therefore, an inventory of intersections at the city level was obtained, focusing on road infrastructure parameters and cyclist victims. In terms of infrastructure, the intersections were classified by type (number of arms), presence of cycling infrastructure and traffic signals. On the other hand, the cyclist victims were analysed in three different categories: all victims (regardless severity), slightly injured victims, and seriously injured and killed victims. A methodology to cluster the nodes and ways conforming the traffic network from OSM was presented, taking into account the road hierarchy. This process led to identify the intersections as single points from the clustered nodes, and to count the number of streets arriving to each intersection from the clustered ways. Later, the geolocated victims were matched and assigned to the intersections, leading to conduct a spatial and statistical analysis of cycling victims, including the identification of hotspots. The proposed methodology was implemented in Leipzig (Germany), Marseille (France) and Edinburgh (Great Britain), which were found to be comparable in terms of area and population density, and taking into consideration the crash data availability. Based on the results by typology, 3-arm intersections presented the highest distribution of intersections with cyclist victims, with at least 50% in each of the three cities. However, comparing the rate of intersections with victims among all intersections of the same type, intersections with five or more arms, and roundabouts had the highest percentages in each city. When studying the different infrastructure parameters, in most cases the results suggested that intersections with traffic signals were safer for cyclists. Similarly, this pattern was also obtained when exploring the different categories associated with the severity level of the victims. Regarding the hotspots analysis, it was found that typically the hotspots were located in non-residential streets, particularly when analysing the most critical severity level (seriously injured and killed cyclists). Since OSM is a promising data source for replicable road safety assessments, more researchers are encouraged to include it in their analysis worldwide, being aware of data correctness and avail-ability. Additional data from other VGI sources is also advised to complement future analyses.

    Abstract Background. Traditional crash-based analysis of road safety at individual sites has its shortcomings due to low numbers and the random nature of crashes at individual sites and the related statistical issues, as well as the under-reporting of crashes and lack of information on contributing factors and the process preceding crashes. To get around the problem, road safety analysis based on surrogate measures of safety, i.e. not based on crashes, can be used. However, the question whether surrogate measures are valid indicators for safety remains unanswered and only a few attempts have actually been made to carry out proper large-scale validation studies. Aim. This work presents a methodological approach for a large-scale validation study of surrogate safety indicators focusing on vulnerable road users. With only one site analyzed so far, it presents the exploration of the data and of the performance of the technical tools used in the study. Method. Video-filming and consequent video analysis are used to measure the surrogate safety indicators. In the first step, the video is “condensed” using a watchdog software RUBA that selects situations with an encounter of a cyclist or pedestrian and a motor vehicle. At a later stage, the trajectories of the individual road users are produced using a semi-automated tool T-Analyst and several surrogate safety indicators are tested to set a severity score for an encounter. The performance of the surrogate indicators will be compared to the expected number of accidents at each site and availability of the data for developing a safety performance function (SPF) that is country-, manoeuvreand type of VRU-specific are explored. Results & Conclusion. From methodological perspective, limited accident data available seriously complicates building a reliable SPF (“ground truth”) against which the surrogate safety measures could be validated; some other, “indirect” methods of validation might be required. We present also the performance of the software tools and applicability of the various surrogate safety indicators that were tested.

    Nighttime crashes at intersections are a major traffic safety concern in the United States. Although providing lighting at intersections has proved to be a successful intervention against night crashes, current approaches to designing lighting at intersections are relatively simplistic, based on recommending light levels. These light levels stem from research that evaluated the effect of intersection lighting on night crashes, which does not account for the role of a driver’s visual performance or the effects of vehicle headlamps. For effective lighting design at intersections, empirical research is required to evaluate the effects of intersection lighting design on a driver’s visual performance as well as perceived visibility and glare. The current study had two goals. The first was to quantify visual performance in three lighting configurations (illuminating the intersection box, approach, or both). The second was to determine what lighting levels within each lighting configuration support the best visual performance. The study involved a target detection task, completed at night on a realistic roadway intersection. Twenty-four participants completed the study, with equal numbers of younger (18–35 years) and older (65+) individuals. Illuminating the intersection box led to superior visual performance, as indicated by longer target detection distances, fewer missed targets, and more targets identified within a safe stopping distance. For this lighting configuration, visual performance plateaued between an illuminance level of 8 and 12 lux. Visual performance was inferior in lighting configurations in which only the approach to the intersection or both the approach to the intersection and the intersection box were illuminated, and there was not consistent plateauing of visual performance in either condition. Increased performance with box lighting was likely due largely to the rendering of targets involved. Visual performance was reduced among older participants, though age-related differences were consistent across lighting configurations. These results have important implications for the design of intersection lighting at isolated or rural intersections. Specifically, results indicated that illuminating the intersection box is an effective strategy to increase nighttime visual performance for a wider range of driver ages and could also be an energy-efficient solution.

    In the last decades the private vehicle has been the most commonly used transportation mode for daily journeys. This is a National and European trend and it is due to the economic growth and the investments focused on the road infrastructures. Because of that reason, cities have been often organized in terms of planning with especial attention to road vehicles and not well prepared for pedestrians and cyclists. There is a need to change this behavior to a society that privileges the active transportation modes. However, there is the need to ensure the safety of the most vulnerable users. This Dissertation was focused on analyzing the trends of road crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians and what are the main difficulties that people using active modes face in their daily journeys. In order to reach this objective, crashes registrations involving motor vehicles and vulnerable road users (pedestrians or cyclists) in the city of Aveiro were analyzed (given by the Public Safety Police “PSP” of Aveiro). In relation to accidents involving cyclists, 68% the victims are men; this can be possibly explained because there are more men cyclists than women as was verified in the sample of the survey, but there is a lack of statistics in Aveiro on the gender distribution of cyclists involved in accidents. In a second stage, a survey was prepared with the objective to understand the main difficulties of the university community who use the active modes in their daily journeys. From the survey it has been pointed out that the main problems found are the lack of drivers’ awareness and weather conditions. The third reason was the lack of dedicate cycle lanes. On the other hand, the main motivations for biking are the reduced cost and the easiness of mobility.

  • ITS Applications have in recent years assisted in reducing the number of fatalities in Europe. However, Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) have not benefited as much as vehicle users. The EU-sponsored VRUITS project assesses the safety and mobility impacts of ITS applications for VRUs, assesses the impacts of current and upcoming ITS applications on the safety and mobility of VRUs, identifies how the usability and efficiency of ITS applications can be improved, and recommends which actions have to be taken at a policy level to improve ITS safety and mobility. This paper describes the results of the first phase of the project, in which the critical scenarios for VRUs are identified starting from accident data analysis, and following a user needs based on focus groups and expert interviews. From this basis, the most promising ITS applications for VRUs are selected according to their potential to address the specific needs of VRUs

Behavioural observation of interactions between vulnerable road users and autonomous shuttles in Oslo, Norway. Traffic Safety Research, 2, 000008. https://doi.org/10.55329/fbhr3456 The current paper presents the results of behavioural observations in a field experiment with automated shuttles in Oslo, Norway. Video observations were conducted at five fixed locations along a challenging 1.2 km automated shuttle line with varying traffic conditions. Observed interactions between vulnerable road users and automated shuttles were coded using a predefined codebook, which allowed a structured quantitative analysis. The paper identified several potentially risky types of situations in which the automated shuttles did not always behave according to the traffic rules. Generally, the automated shuttles failed to give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings in 26%–50% of the interactions. Right-turning shuttles failed to yield to cyclists going straight in 38% of the interactions at observation Site 1 (the only location where the automated shuttle takes a right turn). In majority of same direction interactions between cyclists and automated shuttles, the interactions resulted in the cyclist overtaking the automated shuttle, usually on the left-hand side. Generally, the paper found little evidence of road users trying to bully or otherwise take advantage of the defensive driving style of the automated shuttles and identified only a limited number of interactions in which a vulnerable road user behaved ignorant or aggressive towards the automated shuttles. In addition, the paper found very little indication of temporal effects that suggest changes in the interaction patterns over time.

  • ITS Applications have in recent years assisted in reducing the number of fatalities in Europe. However, Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) have not benefited as much as vehicle users. The EU-sponsored VRUITS project assesses the safety and mobility impacts of ITS applications for VRUs, assesses the impacts of current and upcoming ITS applications on the safety and mobility of VRUs, identifies how the usability and efficiency of ITS applications can be improved, and recommends which actions have to be taken at a policy level to improve ITSsafety and mobility. This paper describes the results of the first phase of the project, in which the critical scenarios for VRUs are identified starting from accident data analysis, and following a user needs based on focus groups and expert interviews. From this basis, the most promising ITS applications for VRUs are selected according to their potential to address the specific needs of VRUs.

    Road crashes produce more than one million deaths every year around the world, and they are considered as the eighth cause of death for people of all ages. In addition to loss of life, traffic crashes carry more consequences with high impact on the society, including reduction of quality of life, medical costs, property damage and administrative costs. Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users, and there has been an increment on cycling victims in European roads in the last years. Previous research on road safety has shown the impact of road infrastructure on crash risk and severity, which makes essential to consider it in road safety analyses. Although official traffic authorities have infrastructure inventories, this information is rather difficult to get, and usually it is not suitable for road safety assessments. However, due to the increasing use and contribution of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), crowdsourced geographic data is being created around the world, and particularly infrastructure-related data is freely available in OpenStreetMap (OSM). Motivated by the challenge of reducing cyclist victims from traffic crashes, and the availability of data through VGI, the main objective of this research was assessing cyclist safety considering infrastructure parameters from OSM. Therefore, an inventory of intersections at the city level was obtained, focusing on road infrastructure parameters and cyclist victims. In terms of infrastructure, the intersections were classified by type (number of arms), presence of cycling infrastructure and traffic signals. On the other hand, the cyclist victims were analysed in three different categories: all victims (regardless severity), slightly injured victims, and seriously injured and killed victims. A methodology to cluster the nodes and ways conforming the traffic network from OSM was presented, taking into account the road hierarchy. This process led to identify the intersections as single points from the clustered nodes, and to count the number of streets arriving to each intersection from the clustered ways. Later, the geolocated victims were matched and assigned to the intersections, leading to conduct a spatial and statistical analysis of cycling victims, including the identification of hotspots. The proposed methodology was implemented in Leipzig (Germany), Marseille (France) and Edinburgh (Great Britain), which were found to be comparable in terms of area and population density, and taking into consideration the crash data availability. Based on the results by typology, 3-arm intersections presented the highest distribution of intersections with cyclist victims, with at least 50% in each of the three cities. However, comparing the rate of intersections with victims among all intersections of the same type, intersections with five or more arms, and roundabouts had the highest percentages in each city. When studying the different infrastructure parameters, in most cases the results suggested that intersections with traffic signals were safer for cyclists. Similarly, this pattern was also obtained when exploring the different categories associated with the severity level of the victims. Regarding the hotspots analysis, it was found that typically the hotspots were located in non-residential streets, particularly when analysing the most critical severity level (seriously injured and killed cyclists). Since OSM is a promising data source for replicable road safety assessments, more researchers are encouraged to include it in their analysis worldwide, being aware of data correctness and avail-ability. Additional data from other VGI sources is also advised to complement future analyses.
