    Governments, automotive manufacturers, energy companies, charging infrastructure operators, mobility service providers, technology providers and aggregators across the globe are preparing themselves for a rapid transition from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric mobility. Increasing from the current global sales of 2.1 million units in 2019, electric vehicles are expected to account for nearly 57 percent of all vehicle sales and over 30 percent of all vehicle fleet by 2040. International experience indicates that the key factors responsible for driving this transition are a) conducive policy and regulatory support across the electric mobility value chain, b) technological advancements (new and improved battery chemistries, automation in retail electricity business) and c) increased customer preference for green mobility options (influenced by rising fuel prices and concerns regarding local air pollution, climate change). An analysis was undertaken by the World Bank to review the development of e-mobility in India, identify remaining challenges and mitigation measures to support India’s electric mobility vision. This report presents the findings of the analysis and lays out a set of recommendations for consideration by different stakeholders.

    The California economy is in the doldrums, especially in the Los Angeles region, owing in large part to the decline of aerospace-defense industries. The region also suffers from the nation's worst pollution problem, owing largely to its dependence on automobiles. So, we're led to ask whether these linked perils might be converted into a combined opportunity. We ask whether we might blunt both the environmental and the employment problems by building a new electric-vehicle industry in Southern California that exploits its skilled but underemployed labor and managerial resources and creates a transportation system that doesn't pollute.

    Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a great alternative for decarbonizing the transport sector. However, insufficient recharging infrastructure and limited range increase the driver’s ‘range anxiety’. Furthermore, the autonomy information provided by vehicle manufacturers differs from the range obtained under real-driving conditions. In order to estimate the actual range of an EV under different driving profiles, accurate computational modeling is required. This paper presents a library for modeling and simulating EVs using the object-oriented modeling language Modelica that allows calculating the energy consumption and the impact of different driving behaviors on the vehicle’s driving range. Each vehicle’s model only requires generic parameters that can be obtained from the vehicle’s manufacturer’s specification sheet. The parameters of the example models have been calibrated using vehicle parameters found in the literature for several commercial vehicles. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

    Currently we are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution, which involves, among others, technology to prevent climate change, transformation of the transport sector, digitization, and artificial intelligence. This paper contributes to technological development accelerating the design of ecological vehicles and their introduction in smart cities. This paper describes an adaptive, flexible, expandable, simple, and high-accuracy methodology capable of maximizing vehicle range with the finest computational effort, thanks to a genetic algorithm. Further, it produces predictive information to minimize cost, volume, and weight of the drivetrain in the vehicle structure while meeting the desires of the designer. Range is calculated using a standard or customised drive cycle. Calculation of the CO2 produced in the electricity production process is also provided. The reliability of the system has been verified with commercially available vehicles, taking into account their technical specifications such as electric motor type (e.g. induction, permanent magnet, or hybrid electric motors), the technology of the energy storage system (e.g. nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion batteries or fuel cell), configuration (e.g. pure electric vehicle, series/parallel/series-parallel (plug-in) hybrid electric vehicle, or fuel cell vehicle) and their category (light quadricycles [L6e], heavy quadricycles [L7e], passenger cars [M1], vans [N1], or low-speed vehicles).     Knowledge of real-world greenhouse gas emission rates for traffic is necessary for forecasting transport greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents greenhouse gas emission rates that assist forecasting and modelling greenhouse gas emissions from light vehicles, i.e. private passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles under realistic traffic conditions. It develops confidence intervals for market shares by categories for fuel or energy efficiency on the Australian market for new light vehicles for the period 2016–2030. The model estimates realistic market scenarios by simulating likely variations of capital and running costs of alternatives for car buyers and by considering buyers’ willingness-to-pay for fuel/energy efficiency. The results suggest that market forces will be insufficient to promote battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Australia. On average the widths of the 95% confidence intervals for greenhouse emission rates are about 10–15% of the magnitudes of the emission rates, so that analysts can forecast transport greenhouse gas emissions with a reasonable level of certainty. The study suggests that policy interventions to accelerate the uptake of low or zero emitting vehicles may be required. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

    In the United States, vehicle emissions are responsible for 29% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the majority of these coming from light-duty vehicles. To reduce GHG emissions, the U.S. has adopted policies to support the development and deployment of low-carbon fuels and zero emission vehicles (ZEVs—e.g., plug-in hybrid electric vehicles [PHEVs] and battery electric vehicles [EVs]).Most current policies focus on emissions from vehicle operation only, omitting significant contributions from vehicle production and other parts of the vehicle and energy life cycle.GHG emissions from vehicle operation and even from operation plus production are almost always lower for EVs than for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (see Figure). However, as EVs become more efficient, low-carbon electricity becomes more common, and the size of the global EV fleet increases, emissions from production and other non-operation parts of the life cycle become increasingly important.Researchers at UC Davis studied: (i) the effect of different factors on life cycle emissions; (ii) the impact of excluding life cycle emissions from policies; and (iii) potential strategies that might be used to effectively incorporate life cycle emissions in light-duty vehicle GHG policy.     Recent studies suggest that advances in rear seat occupant protection are trailing while frontal crash prevention technologies have disproportionately improved front seat occupant safety. Therefore, the first objective of this study is to identify the safest seat for children by estimating injury severity by seat position using current crash data. The second objective of this study is to demonstrate that Level-2 and above (i.e., L2+) AVs will be significantly different from current vehicles regarding child injury severity, and therefore it is essential to find the safest seat for children in L2+ AVs. This study utilized data from the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) to estimate crash injury severity by seat position in children. This study used the Injury Severity Score (ISS) as its measure of crash severity. The mean ISS for restrained children sitting in the front passenger seat was 0.494 (for model year > 2000 vehicles). The mean ISSs for second-row left and second-row right seats were 0.374 and 0.322, respectively. The second-row middle seat had 162, 98, and 71% lower mean ISSs than the front passenger, second-row left, and second-row right seats, respectively. Overall, in both restrained and unrestrained scenarios, the safest seat for a child was the second-row middle seat.

    Governments, automotive manufacturers, energy companies, charging infrastructure operators, mobility service providers, technology providers and aggregators across the globe are preparing themselves for a rapid transition from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric mobility. Increasing from the current global sales of 2.1 million units in 2019, electric vehicles are expected to account for nearly 57 percent of all vehicle sales and over 30 percent of all vehicle fleet by 2040. International experience indicates that the key factors responsible for driving this transition are a) conducive policy and regulatory support across the electric mobility value chain, b) technological advancements (new and improved battery chemistries, automation in retail electricity business) and c) increased customer preference for green mobility options (influenced by rising fuel prices and concerns regarding local air pollution, climate change). An analysis was undertaken by the World Bank to review the development of e-mobility in India, identify remaining challenges and mitigation measures to support India’s electric mobility vision. This report presents the findings of the analysis and lays out a set of recommendations for consideration by different stakeholders.

    The California economy is in the doldrums, especially in the Los Angeles region, owing in large part to the decline of aerospace-defense industries. The region also suffers from the nation's worst pollution problem, owing largely to its dependence on automobiles. So, we're led to ask whether these linked perils might be converted into a combined opportunity. We ask whether we might blunt both the environmental and the employment problems by building a new electric-vehicle industry in Southern California that exploits its skilled but underemployed labor and managerial resources and creates a transportation system that doesn't pollute.

    Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a great alternative for decarbonizing the transport sector. However, insufficient recharging infrastructure and limited range increase the driver’s ‘range anxiety’. Furthermore, the autonomy information provided by vehicle manufacturers differs from the range obtained under real-driving conditions. In order to estimate the actual range of an EV under different driving profiles, accurate computational modeling is required. This paper presents a library for modeling and simulating EVs using the object-oriented modeling language Modelica that allows calculating the energy consumption and the impact of different driving behaviors on the vehicle’s driving range. Each vehicle’s model only requires generic parameters that can be obtained from the vehicle’s manufacturer’s specification sheet. The parameters of the example models have been calibrated using vehicle parameters found in the literature for several commercial vehicles. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.
