    This research evaluates relevant prerequisites for Personal Air Transport System (PATS) introduction into the urban transport modelling environment. Integrating Personal Air Vehicles (PAV) into existing transport systems poses various questions, which have to be thoroughly assessed. Therefore, different possible concepts of operations are being discussed, including not only ownership structure but also aspects like the adaptability of schedules (on-demand vs. scheduled services). Furthermore different demand drivers, such as job, housing, and retail location, user behaviour and mode choice are being presented with a digression on possible impacts on the city structure. In addition to that, potential cities for PAV introduction and the required properties are examined. Finally, different state-of-the-art approaches for transport modelling are constituted in order to lay the foundation for further research.

    As air traffic congestion grows, ground-holding (or “gate-holding”) of aircraft is becoming increasingly common. The “ground-holding policy problem” (GHPP) consists of developing strategies for deciding which aircraft to hold on the ground and for how long. In this paper we present a stochastic linear programming solution to the static GHPP for a single airport. The computational complexity of existing solutions requires heuristic approaches in order to solve practical instances of the problem. The advantage of our solution is that, even for the largest airports, problem instances result in linear programs that can be solved optimally using just a personal computer. We present a set of algorithms and compare their performance to a deterministic solution and to the passive strategy of no ground-holds (i.e., to the strategy of taking all delays in the air) under different weather scenarios.

    For the purposes of this book, "open skies" refers to a bilateral or multilateral air service agreement that liberalizes the rules for international aviation markets and minimizes government intervention. It can apply to passenger or cargo services or both, for both scheduled and charter air services. This book evaluates Africa's progress toward liberalizing air services. It specifically examines what the term implementation means in the context of applying the principles of one of the major pan-African multilateral agreements, the Yamoussoukro decision. It also highlights the shortcomings of the 20-year-old effort toward liberalizing air services in Africa by analyzing pending or completed implementation steps both on a pan-Africa level and within various regions. The book focuses on the challenges posed by the poor aviation safety and security standards in most African countries. Finally the sector work measures the impact of certain policy steps of the decision and evaluates the economic significance of air transportation and its full liberalization in Africa. It concludes with policy recommendations that aim at completing implementation to fully liberalize Africa's air services.

    Abstract In recent years, there is a phenomenon in many major cities that building more roads to relieve traffic congestion achieves nothing more than encouraging more vehicles to use them, resulting in more congestion which is one of the prime sources of bad air quality and inefficient use of energy. Facing with these problems, a number of major cities are either building or planning to build mass transit railways as a backbone, supplemented by light rails and other transit modes to enhance mobility and network connectivity. This paper reviews a number of emerging and innovative lightweight transit systems, from an urban mobility and sustainable development perspective. The objective of the paper is to serve as a reference to practitioners who are involved in the planning and design of sustainable transportation systems.

    This study examines the relationships between job stress, satisfaction, performance and turnover intention among air traffic controllers in Taiwan. In addition, personality traits, gender and marital status are examined as moderators in the effects on the turnover intention of an air traffic controller. The results show that the turnover intention of controllers increases as the job stress becomes heavier. In addition to the direct effect, turnover intention is also influenced by job stress indirectly through job satisfaction. Job stress and job performance are negatively correlated while job performance and turnover intention have no relationship. As for the moderators, different personality traits of air traffic controllers have different effects on job stress.

    This research evaluates relevant prerequisites for Personal Air Transport System (PATS) introduction into the urban transport modelling environment. Integrating Personal Air Vehicles (PAV) into existing transport systems poses various questions, which have to be thoroughly assessed. Therefore, different possible concepts of operations are being discussed, including not only ownership structure but also aspects like the adaptability of schedules (on-demand vs. scheduled services). Furthermore different demand drivers, such as job, housing, and retail location, user behaviour and mode choice are being presented with a digression on possible impacts on the city structure. In addition to that, potential cities for PAV introduction and the required properties are examined. Finally, different state-of-the-art approaches for transport modelling are constituted in order to lay the foundation for further research.

    As air traffic congestion grows, ground-holding (or “gate-holding”) of aircraft is becoming increasingly common. The “ground-holding policy problem” (GHPP) consists of developing strategies for deciding which aircraft to hold on the ground and for how long. In this paper we present a stochastic linear programming solution to the static GHPP for a single airport. The computational complexity of existing solutions requires heuristic approaches in order to solve practical instances of the problem. The advantage of our solution is that, even for the largest airports, problem instances result in linear programs that can be solved optimally using just a personal computer. We present a set of algorithms and compare their performance to a deterministic solution and to the passive strategy of no ground-holds (i.e., to the strategy of taking all delays in the air) under different weather scenarios.
