    This dissertation aims at assessing the impact of liner shipping trade and competition regulations on the market structure, prices, and seaborne trade flows. To quantify the overall level of trade restrictions in the liner shipping sector, I construct an original Service Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI). The original STRI is included in a two-stage econometric analysis. Since barriers to trade are likely to influence seaborne trade through maritime transport costs (MTCs), in a first stage, I assess the impact of trade restrictions on MTCs. And, in a second stage I assess the impact of MTCs on seaborne trade flows. I show that barriers to trade affect positively MTCs and that MTCs affect negatively seaborne trade flows. Thus, barriers to trade have an indirect and negative impact on seaborne trade flows. Furthermore, I show that distance affects positively MTCs. The results also suggest that besides affecting negatively seaborne trade through MTCs, distance affect directly and positively seaborne trade. I assess the impact of regulatory barriers to entry on the market structure and MTCs. In a first stage, I assess the impact of regulations on the market structure. In a second stage, I assess the impact of the market structure on MTCs. I show that the presence of maritime conferences does not affect the number of carriers on routes while the presence of discussion agreements does. Moreover, when they reach a critical level, barriers to trade limit the number of carriers. Furthermore, I show barriers to trade affect MTCs through the market structure and marginal costs. Finally, I show that shipping exercise a market power even though this effect is small.; J’évalue l’impact des réglementations commerciales et concurrentielles dans transport maritime de ligne sur la structure du marché, les coûts de transport et le commerce maritime. D’abord, je quantifie le niveau global des Barrières Commerciales (BC) dans le secteur du transport maritime de ligne en construisant un Indice de Restriction du Commerce des Services (IRCS). Cet indicateur est inclus dans une analyse économétrique en deux étapes. Les BC sont susceptibles d’influencer le commerce maritime à travers les Coûts de Transport Maritime (CTM). Ainsi, j’évalue l'impact des BC sur les CTM, puis l'impact des CTM sur le commerce maritime. Je montre que les BC ont un impact positif sur les CTM et que les CTM ont un impact négatif sur le commerce maritime. Ainsi, les BC ont un impact indirect négatif sur le commerce maritime. Je montre aussi qu’en plus d’affecter négativement le commerce maritime à travers les CTM, la distance a un impact positif direct sur le commerce maritime. Ensuite, j’évalue l'impact des barrières réglementaires à l'entrée sur la structure du marché et les CTM. D’abord, j’évalue l'impact de la réglementation sur la structure du marché. Puis, j’évalue l'impact de la structure du marché sur les CTM. Je montre que la présence de conférences maritimes n’a pas d’impact sur le nombre de compagnies sur les routes alors que la présence d'accords de discussion a un impact positif. De plus, lorsqu’elles atteignent un seuil, les BC ont un impact négatif sur le nombre de compagnies. En outre, je montre les BC affectent les CTM à travers la structure du marché et les coûts marginaux. Enfin, je montre que les compagnies maritimes de ligne exercent un pouvoir de marché.

    This work shows the role of the maritime system in the transport system of the Republic of Croatia through its activities and regulations that accompany it, and the importance of maritime transport itself through its effects on seaports, shipping and tourism. The objectives of this paper are as follows: to process the regulation of maritime transport, to develop the activities we encounter in maritime transport, to analyze the impact of seaports and maritime shipping together with maritime tourism, and to study development plans for seaports in Croatia. U ovom radu pokazana je uloga pomorskog sustava u prometnom sustavu Republike Hrvatske kroz njezine djelatnosti i regulative koje ju prate, te značaj samog pomorskog prometa kroz učinke na morske luke, brodarstvo i turizam. Ciljevi ovog rada su sljedeći: obraditi regulativu pomorskog prometa, razraditi djelatnosti koje susrećemo u pomorskom prometu, analizirati učinak morskih luka i morskog brodarstva zajedno sa pomorskim turizmom , te proučiti razvojne planove za morske luke Republike Hrvatske.

    The maritime transport sector accounts for around 2.9% of the world’s anthropogenic emissions, a percentage that is growing yearly. Alternative fuels have come to be considered the necessary solution of the future, not least in island nations such as Fiji that are socially and economically dependent on sustainable maritime transport. Amongst these potential fuels is green hydrogen: a versatile, low-carbon fuel that causes no air pollution. This thesis investigates the feasibility of a future implementation of liquid hydrogen in combination with fuel cells in Fiji’s maritime transport sector through a literature study and mathematical analysis. The thesis provides an economical and technological suitability analysis as well as an investigation of the socio-political context through meetings with local stakeholders. The mathematical analysis focuses on the routes that are included in Fiji’s Government Shipping Franchise Scheme (GSFS), which is a governmentally funded scheme to subsidize uneconomical domestic routes in Fiji. The results indicate that liquid hydrogen would be suitable for 9 out of 10 GSFS routes and for most of the domestic maritime sector. The national funds intended for maritime transport would be sufficient for a proof-of-concept or a first small-scale implantation, but international financial support would be needed for a full implementation. There is a lack of data and research in the maritime sector of Fiji and a significant amount of additional research is necessary for a larger implementation. This paper is intended to be an elemental study modelling a foundation for further similar research. Den martima transportsektorn står för cirka 2,9% av världens antropogena utsläpp, en andel som växer årligen. Idag betraktas därav en global implementering av alternativa bränslen som ett nödvändigt steg för en klimatvänlig transportsektor, inte minst för önationer såsom Fiji som är socialt och ekonomiskt beroende av en hållbar maritim transportsektor. Bland dessa potentiella alternativa bränslen ingår väte, ett grönt mångsidigt bränsle som bidrar till varken luftföroreningar eller koldioxidutsläpp. Den här rapporten undersöker en möjlig framtida implementering av flytande väte i kombination med bränslecellsteknologi i Fijis maritima transportsektor genom en matematisk analys och literaturstudie. Uppsatsen tillhandahåller både en ekonomisk och en teknisk lämplighetsanalys, samt en undersökning av Fijis nuvarande socio-politiska inställning till en potentiell implementeringen genom möten med olika myndigheter i Fiji. Den matematiska analysen fokuserar på de rutter som ingår i Fijis "Government Shipping Franchise Scheme", vilken är ett statligt finansierat transportsystem av inhemska oekonomsika maritima rutter. Resultaten indikerar att flytande väte är ett lämpligt bränsle för 9 av 10 rutter som ingår i Fijis GSFS, samt stora delar av den inhemska maritima transportsektorn. Kostnadsuppskattningarna visar på behovet av internationellt stöd i fallet av en fullständig och storskalig implementering, men även att landets nationella ekonomiska medel är tillräckliga för ett "proof-of-concept" eller en första småskaliga implementering. På grund av den nuvarande bristen av tidigare forskning och data kring Fijis maritime transportsektor, är denna artikel avsedd att vara en första grundläggande studie som breder vägen för vidare forskning och som identifierar områden i behov av ytterligare analyser.

    The main issue addressed in this paper relates to the analysis of maritime passenger ports in the Republic of Croatia and the impact of this type of maritime transport on tourism in the Republic of Croatia. Liner maritime passenger traffic is important for the development of coastal economies, especially tourism and trade, in preventing the emigration of the island population. Accordingly, it is necessary to invest in the modernization of liner passenger ships in order to respond to the difficult winter conditions of sailing, and the prolongation of the tourist season would lead to more frequent passenger lines. Considering that the liner maritime passenger traffic represents a significant type of transport in Croatia, the conducted research was directed toward that segment specifically. In order to achieve the set goals of this paper, the secondary and the primary research have been conducted. The aim of the primary research was to explore satisfaction of the consumers with the services of liner maritime passenger traffic in Croatia, and to identify possibilities for further improvements. A highly structured questionnaire has been used as the survey instrument. The survey was conducted during September 2017 on the sample of 119 respondents. Research results indicate that the major part of the respondents believe that it is necessary to increase the number of the lines. Also, they agree that high quality maritime passenger traffic is a prerequisite for adequate development of life and tourism on Croatian islands. Results reflect that respondents are not satisfied with the offer of additional services during the ride and they have marked that the prices of additional services, as well as the prices of the tickets are too high. It is crucial to increase the number of lines in the future and to ensure the entry of some new players on the Croatian market of liner passenger traffic.

    Alternative fuels are crucial to decarbonize the European maritime transport, but their net climate benefits vary with the type of fuel and production country. In this study, we assess the energy potential and climate change mitigation benefits of using agricultural and forest residues in different European countries for drop-in (Fast Pyrolysis, Hydrothermal Liquefaction, and Gasification to Fischer-Tropsch fuels or Bio-Synthetic Natural Gas) and hydrogen-based biofuels (hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol) with or without carbon capture and storage (CCS). Our results show the combinations of countries and biofuel options that successfully achieve the decarbonization targets set by the FuelEU Maritime initiative for the next years, including a prospective analysis that include technological changes projected for the biofuel supply chains until 2050. With the current technologies, the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential per year at a European scale is obtained with bio-synthetic natural gas and hydrothermal liquefaction. Among carbon-free biofuels, ammonia currently has higher mitigation, but hydrogen can achieve a lower GHG intensity per unit of energy with the projected decarbonization of the electricity mixes until 2050. The full deployment of CCS can further accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Choosing the most suitable renewable fuels requires a regional perspective and a transition roadmap where countries coordinate actions to meet ambitious climate targets.

    Maritime industry plays a key role for economy of the European Union. During recent years in-creasing attention is paid to the education and training of seafarers as the seafarers and their knowledge are essential to sustainable development of the maritime cluster, as indicated in the maritime strategy of European Union. However, for successful implementation of the strategy understanding of current trends in the pool of seafarers is prerequisite. Therefore the aim of this article is to analyze parameters and processes of Latvian seafarer’s pool, based on information from database of Maritime Administration of Latvia Seamen Registry. The structure of database and data collected there gives possibility to analyze the processes taking into ac-count the global changes in shipping and their impact to the structure of the pool. Such analysis in combination with the calculations of economical value of seafarer’s pool creates the framework on which the decisions about the implementation of maritime strategy in Latvia can be taken.

    This dissertation aims at assessing the impact of liner shipping trade and competition regulations on the market structure, prices, and seaborne trade flows. To quantify the overall level of trade restrictions in the liner shipping sector, I construct an original Service Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI). The original STRI is included in a two-stage econometric analysis. Since barriers to trade are likely to influence seaborne trade through maritime transport costs (MTCs), in a first stage, I assess the impact of trade restrictions on MTCs. And, in a second stage I assess the impact of MTCs on seaborne trade flows. I show that barriers to trade affect positively MTCs and that MTCs affect negatively seaborne trade flows. Thus, barriers to trade have an indirect and negative impact on seaborne trade flows. Furthermore, I show that distance affects positively MTCs. The results also suggest that besides affecting negatively seaborne trade through MTCs, distance affect directly and positively seaborne trade. I assess the impact of regulatory barriers to entry on the market structure and MTCs. In a first stage, I assess the impact of regulations on the market structure. In a second stage, I assess the impact of the market structure on MTCs. I show that the presence of maritime conferences does not affect the number of carriers on routes while the presence of discussion agreements does. Moreover, when they reach a critical level, barriers to trade limit the number of carriers. Furthermore, I show barriers to trade affect MTCs through the market structure and marginal costs. Finally, I show that shipping exercise a market power even though this effect is small.; J’évalue l’impact des réglementations commerciales et concurrentielles dans transport maritime de ligne sur la structure du marché, les coûts de transport et le commerce maritime. D’abord, je quantifie le niveau global des Barrières Commerciales (BC) dans le secteur du transport maritime de ligne en construisant un Indice de Restriction du Commerce des Services (IRCS). Cet indicateur est inclus dans une analyse économétrique en deux étapes. Les BC sont susceptibles d’influencer le commerce maritime à travers les Coûts de Transport Maritime (CTM). Ainsi, j’évalue l'impact des BC sur les CTM, puis l'impact des CTM sur le commerce maritime. Je montre que les BC ont un impact positif sur les CTM et que les CTM ont un impact négatif sur le commerce maritime. Ainsi, les BC ont un impact indirect négatif sur le commerce maritime. Je montre aussi qu’en plus d’affecter négativement le commerce maritime à travers les CTM, la distance a un impact positif direct sur le commerce maritime. Ensuite, j’évalue l'impact des barrières réglementaires à l'entrée sur la structure du marché et les CTM. D’abord, j’évalue l'impact de la réglementation sur la structure du marché. Puis, j’évalue l'impact de la structure du marché sur les CTM. Je montre que la présence de conférences maritimes n’a pas d’impact sur le nombre de compagnies sur les routes alors que la présence d'accords de discussion a un impact positif. De plus, lorsqu’elles atteignent un seuil, les BC ont un impact négatif sur le nombre de compagnies. En outre, je montre les BC affectent les CTM à travers la structure du marché et les coûts marginaux. Enfin, je montre que les compagnies maritimes de ligne exercent un pouvoir de marché.

    This work shows the role of the maritime system in the transport system of the Republic of Croatia through its activities and regulations that accompany it, and the importance of maritime transport itself through its effects on seaports, shipping and tourism. The objectives of this paper are as follows: to process the regulation of maritime transport, to develop the activities we encounter in maritime transport, to analyze the impact of seaports and maritime shipping together with maritime tourism, and to study development plans for seaports in Croatia. U ovom radu pokazana je uloga pomorskog sustava u prometnom sustavu Republike Hrvatske kroz njezine djelatnosti i regulative koje ju prate, te značaj samog pomorskog prometa kroz učinke na morske luke, brodarstvo i turizam. Ciljevi ovog rada su sljedeći: obraditi regulativu pomorskog prometa, razraditi djelatnosti koje susrećemo u pomorskom prometu, analizirati učinak morskih luka i morskog brodarstva zajedno sa pomorskim turizmom , te proučiti razvojne planove za morske luke Republike Hrvatske.

    The maritime transport sector accounts for around 2.9% of the world’s anthropogenic emissions, a percentage that is growing yearly. Alternative fuels have come to be considered the necessary solution of the future, not least in island nations such as Fiji that are socially and economically dependent on sustainable maritime transport. Amongst these potential fuels is green hydrogen: a versatile, low-carbon fuel that causes no air pollution. This thesis investigates the feasibility of a future implementation of liquid hydrogen in combination with fuel cells in Fiji’s maritime transport sector through a literature study and mathematical analysis. The thesis provides an economical and technological suitability analysis as well as an investigation of the socio-political context through meetings with local stakeholders. The mathematical analysis focuses on the routes that are included in Fiji’s Government Shipping Franchise Scheme (GSFS), which is a governmentally funded scheme to subsidize uneconomical domestic routes in Fiji. The results indicate that liquid hydrogen would be suitable for 9 out of 10 GSFS routes and for most of the domestic maritime sector. The national funds intended for maritime transport would be sufficient for a proof-of-concept or a first small-scale implantation, but international financial support would be needed for a full implementation. There is a lack of data and research in the maritime sector of Fiji and a significant amount of additional research is necessary for a larger implementation. This paper is intended to be an elemental study modelling a foundation for further similar research. Den martima transportsektorn står för cirka 2,9% av världens antropogena utsläpp, en andel som växer årligen. Idag betraktas därav en global implementering av alternativa bränslen som ett nödvändigt steg för en klimatvänlig transportsektor, inte minst för önationer såsom Fiji som är socialt och ekonomiskt beroende av en hållbar maritim transportsektor. Bland dessa potentiella alternativa bränslen ingår väte, ett grönt mångsidigt bränsle som bidrar till varken luftföroreningar eller koldioxidutsläpp. Den här rapporten undersöker en möjlig framtida implementering av flytande väte i kombination med bränslecellsteknologi i Fijis maritima transportsektor genom en matematisk analys och literaturstudie. Uppsatsen tillhandahåller både en ekonomisk och en teknisk lämplighetsanalys, samt en undersökning av Fijis nuvarande socio-politiska inställning till en potentiell implementeringen genom möten med olika myndigheter i Fiji. Den matematiska analysen fokuserar på de rutter som ingår i Fijis "Government Shipping Franchise Scheme", vilken är ett statligt finansierat transportsystem av inhemska oekonomsika maritima rutter. Resultaten indikerar att flytande väte är ett lämpligt bränsle för 9 av 10 rutter som ingår i Fijis GSFS, samt stora delar av den inhemska maritima transportsektorn. Kostnadsuppskattningarna visar på behovet av internationellt stöd i fallet av en fullständig och storskalig implementering, men även att landets nationella ekonomiska medel är tillräckliga för ett "proof-of-concept" eller en första småskaliga implementering. På grund av den nuvarande bristen av tidigare forskning och data kring Fijis maritime transportsektor, är denna artikel avsedd att vara en första grundläggande studie som breder vägen för vidare forskning och som identifierar områden i behov av ytterligare analyser.

    The main issue addressed in this paper relates to the analysis of maritime passenger ports in the Republic of Croatia and the impact of this type of maritime transport on tourism in the Republic of Croatia. Liner maritime passenger traffic is important for the development of coastal economies, especially tourism and trade, in preventing the emigration of the island population. Accordingly, it is necessary to invest in the modernization of liner passenger ships in order to respond to the difficult winter conditions of sailing, and the prolongation of the tourist season would lead to more frequent passenger lines. Considering that the liner maritime passenger traffic represents a significant type of transport in Croatia, the conducted research was directed toward that segment specifically. In order to achieve the set goals of this paper, the secondary and the primary research have been conducted. The aim of the primary research was to explore satisfaction of the consumers with the services of liner maritime passenger traffic in Croatia, and to identify possibilities for further improvements. A highly structured questionnaire has been used as the survey instrument. The survey was conducted during September 2017 on the sample of 119 respondents. Research results indicate that the major part of the respondents believe that it is necessary to increase the number of the lines. Also, they agree that high quality maritime passenger traffic is a prerequisite for adequate development of life and tourism on Croatian islands. Results reflect that respondents are not satisfied with the offer of additional services during the ride and they have marked that the prices of additional services, as well as the prices of the tickets are too high. It is crucial to increase the number of lines in the future and to ensure the entry of some new players on the Croatian market of liner passenger traffic.

    Alternative fuels are crucial to decarbonize the European maritime transport, but their net climate benefits vary with the type of fuel and production country. In this study, we assess the energy potential and climate change mitigation benefits of using agricultural and forest residues in different European countries for drop-in (Fast Pyrolysis, Hydrothermal Liquefaction, and Gasification to Fischer-Tropsch fuels or Bio-Synthetic Natural Gas) and hydrogen-based biofuels (hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol) with or without carbon capture and storage (CCS). Our results show the combinations of countries and biofuel options that successfully achieve the decarbonization targets set by the FuelEU Maritime initiative for the next years, including a prospective analysis that include technological changes projected for the biofuel supply chains until 2050. With the current technologies, the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential per year at a European scale is obtained with bio-synthetic natural gas and hydrothermal liquefaction. Among carbon-free biofuels, ammonia currently has higher mitigation, but hydrogen can achieve a lower GHG intensity per unit of energy with the projected decarbonization of the electricity mixes until 2050. The full deployment of CCS can further accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Choosing the most suitable renewable fuels requires a regional perspective and a transition roadmap where countries coordinate actions to meet ambitious climate targets.
