    Nowadays, the role of intermodal transport is increasing on the global market. This transport should be developed efficiently considering the customers’ needs, as well as possibilities of services providers. Therefore, innovations are introduced in different areas of this transport to improve its operation, increase entrepreneurship of companies, and meet clients’ expectations. The article aims to investigate the areas of intermodal freight transport development. The case study of Polish market dealing with intermodal transport operation was examined. The areas of innovations development in intermodal transport have been identified. The questionnaire was created, and survey was carried out among intermodal transport companies’ representatives. The opinions of intermodal terminals representatives and forwarders were analyzed in detail. It was possible to create the ranking of areas considered by respondents as essential to introduce innovations in intermodal transport. The opinions of different groups of practitioners involved in intermodal transport were analyzed. Information and telematics technologies development and automation of handling processes were ranked as the most important for implementation of innovations in intermodal transport.

    The purpose of this research is to identify possible improvements within intermodal freight transport transits, with a focus on documentation generated by the movement of digitalization, the emerging revolution Industry 4.0 and implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Logistics (IoL) in the transport industry. Research question: “How can Internet of Things (IoT) enable more time-efficient documentation handling within intermodal freight transits?” Methods Qualitative method, literature review and interviews. Main findings The implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Logistics (IoL) services have together with the fourth industrial revolution changed the environment of performing business. IoT solutions are automatizing business processes and connects the real world with the Internet. IoL solutions are changing the logistics industry and are aiming for seamless chains and transparent information flows. Within intermodal freight transport the concepts of IoT and IoL are used mostly in order to create more efficient solutions in goods handling. An exception is the intelligent video gate (IVG) that is a physical station using radio frequency identification (RFID) to identify and structure the data the goods and vehicles are generating. The technology is currently running in Germany and the implementation results show that IVG have enabled more efficient documentation handling in intermodal freight transport transits. The technology is now implemented in a Swedish intermodal terminal (road-rail) and this research investigate the results in documentation handling within the terminal. The results are positive and a reduce in time during documentation handling identified. MSc in Logistics and Transport Management

    The question of responsibility has been the subject of lot of interest and debate. This work will shed light on responsibility – and sustainability – in the context of transportation with a special emphasis on intermodal freight. This publication provides a subjective - and an impressionistic - interpretation of the concept of responsibility. It is a prelude with the target of encapsulating certain attributes that affect and explain the decisions and policies of responsibility. At the outset of the research, the decision was made to embrace the theme in a more general manner than to limit it to the examination on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR or related acronyms and practices).

    Relatório de Projecto Este trabalho pretende ser uma análise do transporte de mercadorias por modo ferroviário em Portugal e dos aspectos logísticos que lhe estão associados. Faz-se uma reflexão sobre os aspectos que actualmente mais relevo têm na definição da política de transportes, em particular no que se refere à criação de infra-estruturas para o transporte de mercadorias e de apoio logístico. São apresentados alguns dos factores que têm determinado essa política a nível da União Europeia, nomeadamente aqueles que estão relacionados com o transporte ferroviário de mercadorias, com a promoção da transferência modal e da intermodalidade. Referem-se os principais marcos e instrumentos de acção da política europeia para o sector. Faz-se referência a alguns casos, a nível internacional, que constituem investimentos significativos em infra-estruturas ferroviárias dedicadas ao transporte de mercadorias ou de tráfego misto. Apresentam-se estudos de prospectiva, relativos ao futuro da economia portuguesa, elaborados por diversos autores, e faz-se uma reflexão sobre os principais indicadores económicos registados em Portugal no final do século XX e nos primeiros anos deste século, com o objectivo de enquadrar a política de transportes que está ser implementada em Portugal. Analisam-se os aspectos mais relevantes da organização do sector ferroviário em Portugal, dando especial ênfase ao transporte de mercadorias. Descrevem-se as infra-estruturas em uso actualmente em Portugal para o transporte de mercadorias e procede-se à contabilização dos fluxos de mercadorias, quer no País, quer relativos ao comércio externo. Analisa-se a evolução desses fluxos ao longo do tempo, no sentido de perceber as principais tendências. Finalmente, apresentam-se algumas considerações sobre a organização do transporte de mercadorias no futuro, em Portugal, com particular destaque para o transporte ferroviário. This work intends to be an analysis of railway freight transport in Portugal and the logistics aspects associated. The issues that are currently more important in the definition of transport policy are analysed. Particular attention is given to the construction of infrastructure for freight transport and logistic support. Some of the factors that have guided the European Union policy are presented, particularly those related to rail freight, to the modal shift and intermodal transportation. The main instruments of action and milestones of European policy for the sector are highlighted. Reference is made to some cases that represent significant investments in rail infrastructure dedicated to freight and mixed traffic. Foresight studies regarding the future of Portuguese economy are presented. Considerations are made on the main economic indexes recorded in Portugal at the end of the XXth century and the beginning of this century, in order to frame the transport policy that is being implemented in Portugal. The most significant aspects regarding the organisation of the railway transport system in Portugal are analysed, with a particular emphasis on the freight transport. The infrastructures used nowadays in Portugal for freight transport are described. The freight traffic flows are analysed and their growth in time is considered in order to understand the main trends. Finally, considerations are made on the future trends of freight transport in Portugal, namely related to railway freight.

    Authors: Pišković, Josip Luka;

    Intermodal transport requires the full commitment of the operator who carries out the organization of intermodal transport from the consignor to the consignee. Intermodal transport enables door-to-door delivery, and lower transport costs by combining different modes of transport. The paper presents the activity of forwarding, the advantages and disadvantages of intermodal transportation, and in particular the role of freight forwarder in the organization of intermodal transportation, illustrating the hypothetical example of delivering goods to the container. Intermodalni transport zahtjeva potpunu posvećenost operatera koji vrši organizaciju intermodalnog transporta od pošiljatelja do primatelja. Intermodalni transport omogućuje isporuku rube od vrata do vrata, te niže cijene prijevoza kombiniranjem različitih modova prijevoza. U radu je prikazana djelatnost špedicije, zatim prednosti i nedostaci intermodalnog prijevoza, te posebno uloga špeditera u organizaciji intermodalnog prijevoza, uz ilustraciju na hipotetskome primjeru dopreme robe kontejnerom.

    Authors: Maitra, Raja;

    The threat of greenhouse gases and the resulting climate change have been causing concern at international levels. This has led towards new sustainable policies towards reducing the anthropogenic effects on the environment and the population through promoting sustainable solutions for the freight industry. The research was prompted by the growing concerns that were no mode-choice tool to select as an alternative to road freight transport. There were growing concerns that a large percentage of transport related negativities, related various costs and pollution costs, losses arising from traffic accidents, delay costs from congestion and abatement costs due to climate impacts of transport, etc., were not being borne by the user. Economists have defined them as external costs. Internalising these external costs has been regarded as an efficient way to share the transport related costs. The aim of this research was to construct a freight mode choice model, based on total transport costs, as a mode choice substitution tool. This model would allow the feasibility of choosing alternative intermodal system to a primarily ‘road system’. The thesis postulates a novel model in computing total freight transport costs incurred during the total transit of goods along three North European transport corridors. The model evaluated the total costs summing the internal, external and time costs for varied mode choices from unimodal and the second level of intermodal transport systems. The research outcomes have shown the influences of total costs on the shipper and the preferred mode choices from the available mode/route options with sustainable transport solutions. The impacts of such alternatives were evaluated in this research. This will allow the embedding of intermodal infrastructures as sustainable and alternative mode choices for the freight industry.

    Authors: Pišković, Josip Luka;

    Authors: Maitra, Raja;
