    The aim of this article is to present successful and proven actions referring to the management of the parking space realized by the Municipality of Krakow. Skillful and effective management of the parking spaces has a significant impact on the quality of life of the citizens, changing their behaviors and introducing new, better means of transport, and also is an indicator of urban development and its transport systems. The authors present selected results of tests and their implementation. Effective parking management should constitute one of the major, well-coordinated transport policy tools, covering the entire transport system of the city. Urban transport has to face challenges and build relations between the revenues generated by the parking management system consistent with the financing of mobility management tools. Creating favorable conditions for sustainable transport can be done by acquiring knowledge on the ways in which increase the level of social and political acceptance for parking management as a source of income for activities related to increasing the role of sustainable energy-efficient urban transport modes.

    In public transport, e.g., railways, crowding is of major influence on passenger satisfaction and also on system performance. We study the passenger-oriented traffic control problem by means of integrated optimization, particularly considering the crowding effects on passenger route choices and on train traffic. The goal is to find the system optimum solution by adapting train schedules and rerouting passengers. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is proposed, identifying the train orders and departure and arrival times, as well as finding the best route for passengers, with the objective of minimizing passenger disutility and train delay. In the model, we allow free splits of the passengers in a group onto different routes and reasonable passenger transfers between trains. We value train crowding by using time multiplier, which is defined as a piecewise constant function of the train crowding ratio (also called load factor), indicating that passengers perceive a longer travel time on a more crowded train. Moreover, we assume variations of the minimum train dwell time, caused by the alighting and boarding passengers. The nonlinear terms in the MINLP model are linearized by using an exact reformulation method and three transformation properties, resulting in an equivalent mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. In the experiences, we adopt a real-world railway network, i.e., the urban railway network in Zürich city, to examine the proposed approach. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. The results show that, by considering the crowding effects, some passengers are forced to choose the routes that are less crowded but have larger travel/delay times, which leads to the improved passenger comfort and makes the planned train timetable less affected (in terms of delays). We also find that flexibility in train schedules brings more possibilities to serve better the passengers. Moreover, it is observed that if the train dwell time is highly sensitive to the alighting and boarding passengers, then the transport network will become vulnerable and less reliable, which should be avoided in real operations.     The sensitivity of cost-benefit assessments to variations in demand for public transportation is examined. The analysis, based upon detailed computer simulations of urban transportation systems, indicates some major changes in costs and benefits for different demand conditions. However, the relative standing of new systems of urban transportation were not significantly affected. Also discussed are requirements for improved modeling of demand.

    The operation of gas pipelines in utility corridor of a metropolitan city in a developing country has unique challenges. Through this paper, I would like to discuss the threats and mitigation measures in city area pipelines so as to ensure Pipeline Integrity. Excavations keep occurring because of various developmental activities. Construction of Flyovers, roads and subways disturb the pipeline route constantly necessitating Shifting / lowering of operating pipelines. Fault rectification by other agencies sharing the corridor, and proximity of High Voltage lines have also led to incidents resulting in gas leakage. Pipeline Integrity Surveys have been carried out in Delhi area and based on their recommendations, as well as a result of analysis of various incidents that have occurred in the past, a mitigation plan was developed. All the points were complied to ensure the safety and Integrity of pipelines. As can be seen from the various case studies of the past, often risky situations arise due to absence of proper layout design of underground facilities. Liaising with utility corridor agencies and appointing a central regulator for utility corridor, mapping and allocating work permits in the corridor with the help of Geographical Information System (GIS) and other advanced mapping and remote sensors, could become an effective solution. GAIL has developed a GIS for Delhi area pipelines which is proving very useful. To ensure the integrity and safety of the pipeline, a proactive approach is required. Integrity management of Pipelines is a continuous process. Evaluation has to be done constantly and newer steps should be taken each time if required.Copyright © 2004 by ASME

    Airport pavement management systems (APMS) are computer-based decision support systems that can be used by the agencies running airports to determine cost-effective maintenance and rehabilitation strategies to preserve the various pavement structures (runways, taxiways, etc.) which are a critical component of these facilities.     BACKGROUND: The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has stressed why a change towards resilient, robust and sustainable supply chains is more imperative than ever. This is especially true for supply chains of perishable foods, where issues such as the bullwhip effect cause not only economic but also environmental damage. OBJECTIVES: The key objectives of this study are to gain a deeper insight into correlations regarding the causes of the bullwhip effect and to see how a sinusoidal stimulus is affecting the generation of food waste. METHOD: A simplified beef food chain was modelled in Tecnomatix Plant Simulation®. As the bullwhip effect consists of a simplified parameterisation of an excitation duration (period length) and its height (amplitude), these two variables were used to generate a sinusoidal stimulus. The simulation results were statistically verified and checked for commonalities and differences with the already established scientific knowledge. RESULTS: While the expected higher sensitivity of the front links of the supply chain to waste generation can be confirmed, the results of a long stimulation period suggest that the negative effects of the bullwhip effect do not increase indefinitely. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the results has shown that previous theories can be transferred, but that the variation of the variables entails new insights for the interdependencies of the amplitude and period length and their influence on the output variable waste. CONTRIBUTION: The study contributes to a more holistic understanding of the bullwhip effect and, in particular, its implications within a perishable food supply chain.

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a purchasing-logistics integration (PLI) conceptualization along two dimensions: mutual responsibility and integrative efforts. This conceptualization is then tested as to whether it provides any insights for supplier performance. Design/methodology/approach Information-Processing Theory is used to posit hypotheses linking the dimensions of PLI with various measures of supplier performance. Hypotheses are then tested with a dyadic data set of purchasing and logistics managers, using multiple regression methods. Findings Purchasing managers found mutual responsibility to positively influence supplier delivery speed, whereas logistics managers found it to positively influence supplier price performance. Generally speaking, purchasing managers perceived a stronger linkage between formal integrative efforts (liaison roles and joint reward systems) and supplier performance, whereas logistics managers perceived this linkage to be stronger for informal integrative efforts such as information exchange and collaboration. Research limitations/implications Study results are cross-sectional in nature and consist of three major industry groupings. The dyadic data were analyzed separately to avoid significant data loss. Practical implications Supply chain managers will find the areas where purchasing and logistics managers overlap in their perceptions (as well as where they differ) useful. In addition, an understanding of how PLI influences supplier performance should help improve organizational effectiveness. Originality/value PLI is a highly important, yet understudied, internal connection. This study provides a useful framework in helping academics and practitioners better understand this crucial internal connection, and how it relates to the performance extracted from suppliers.

    In Australia the agricultural industry is experiencing major trading difficulties. The project reported here was undertaken to investigate means of streamlining the operation of a major national supplier of farm input products with the objective of decentralised selling with centralised cost‐effective support services and nationally centralised order processing. The preliminary logistics audit is described including supply chain analysis, inventory management, order processing and freight/distribution. Analysis of this led to detailed recommendations. The many recommendations were implemented by the company during the year of the project′s lifetime – a signal success!

    Abstract This paper uses industry wide survey data to assess employees’ perceptions of safety management and safety culture in the aviation industry. Results show that organisations, in ensuring safety, considered employees’ safety responsibilities to be more important than implementing effective safety management systems and encouraging positive safety culture. Aircraft maintenance engineers appeared to be committed to standards and operating procedures and effective organisational processes in making the maintenance system work. Interestingly, pilots regarded luck to be a significant contributing factor in safety. Overall, the findings suggest the various sectors of the aviation industry need to do much more to improve the prevailing safety culture.

    The aim of this article is to present successful and proven actions referring to the management of the parking space realized by the Municipality of Krakow. Skillful and effective management of the parking spaces has a significant impact on the quality of life of the citizens, changing their behaviors and introducing new, better means of transport, and also is an indicator of urban development and its transport systems. The authors present selected results of tests and their implementation. Effective parking management should constitute one of the major, well-coordinated transport policy tools, covering the entire transport system of the city. Urban transport has to face challenges and build relations between the revenues generated by the parking management system consistent with the financing of mobility management tools. Creating favorable conditions for sustainable transport can be done by acquiring knowledge on the ways in which increase the level of social and political acceptance for parking management as a source of income for activities related to increasing the role of sustainable energy-efficient urban transport modes.

    In public transport, e.g., railways, crowding is of major influence on passenger satisfaction and also on system performance. We study the passenger-oriented traffic control problem by means of integrated optimization, particularly considering the crowding effects on passenger route choices and on train traffic. The goal is to find the system optimum solution by adapting train schedules and rerouting passengers. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is proposed, identifying the train orders and departure and arrival times, as well as finding the best route for passengers, with the objective of minimizing passenger disutility and train delay. In the model, we allow free splits of the passengers in a group onto different routes and reasonable passenger transfers between trains. We value train crowding by using time multiplier, which is defined as a piecewise constant function of the train crowding ratio (also called load factor), indicating that passengers perceive a longer travel time on a more crowded train. Moreover, we assume variations of the minimum train dwell time, caused by the alighting and boarding passengers. The nonlinear terms in the MINLP model are linearized by using an exact reformulation method and three transformation properties, resulting in an equivalent mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. In the experiences, we adopt a real-world railway network, i.e., the urban railway network in Zürich city, to examine the proposed approach. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. The results show that, by considering the crowding effects, some passengers are forced to choose the routes that are less crowded but have larger travel/delay times, which leads to the improved passenger comfort and makes the planned train timetable less affected (in terms of delays). We also find that flexibility in train schedules brings more possibilities to serve better the passengers. Moreover, it is observed that if the train dwell time is highly sensitive to the alighting and boarding passengers, then the transport network will become vulnerable and less reliable, which should be avoided in real operations.     The sensitivity of cost-benefit assessments to variations in demand for public transportation is examined. The analysis, based upon detailed computer simulations of urban transportation systems, indicates some major changes in costs and benefits for different demand conditions. However, the relative standing of new systems of urban transportation were not significantly affected. Also discussed are requirements for improved modeling of demand.
